(Realism in Garhwali Literature, Realism in Literature of Uttarakhand, Realism in Himalayan Literature)
                                    Bhishm Kukreti
Before seventies, Jaya Nand Khuksal ‘ Baulya’ ,Kanhyaa lal Dandriyal and Lalit Keshwan came in  modern Garhwali poetry  scene, the poets used to create poetries of Mastergiri (teaching or inspirational ones) . Jayanand Khuksal ‘ Baulya’ is one of the famous poet bringing realism in the Garhwali poetry.
Those who are of my generation would knew that in past Garhwalis of Garhwal were very  eager to watch the twenty sixth shows in Delhi and Garhwalis used to visit Delhi for watching the parade of republic day show in the capital.
Jaya Nand Khuksal depicted a very sensitive poem about republic day celebrated in Delhi.

Jaya Nand Khuksal had been successful in presenting a real and acute life cycle of a poor (mill worker?) of that time without any comments as poet. The poem represents direct, unmediated experience of a person; the poem is away from artifice, visionary or theatrical devices of conventional poetries of older Garhwali verses.
‘Chabbes January’is one of the realistic modern Garhwali poems which, emphasizes experiences and deals with focusing social issue of Khuksal’s young age.
‘Chhabees January’ a modern Garhwali (as per B.P Nautiyal- written around 1950-1960) poem and has same status in realistic poems as ‘The Miller’s Tale’ by Chaucer, ‘My Mistress’s Eyes’ by Shakespeare, ‘A Description of the Morning’ by Swift, ‘Peter Grimes’ by Crabbe, ‘Prophyria’s Lover ‘ by Browning , ‘ Danny Deaver’ by Kipling, for its depicting the contemporary life of a migrated Garhwali who had to balance between the rough life in Delhi city and looking after families in Garhwal too.
If French language is proud of realism in the novels of Stendhal, sand and Balzac for initiating and accelerating realism in French literature, Garhwalis will always remember Jaya Nand Khuksal ‘Baulya’ for bring realistic poetries as against conventional ones
