Bhagwati Prasad Joshi ‘Himwantwasi’ has a prominent place in Garhwali short
story world. Joshi has specific style in Garhwali short story world. Joshi was born in Joshiyana village,
Parsundakhal, Pauri Garhwal in 1927. Joshi started his literature career as
Hindi writer and he created Hindi Garhwali stories with vigor. Bhagwati Prasad wrote
more than fifteen stories in Garhwali published in various periodicals. ‘Dhanga ki Atmkatha’ story collection book was
published in 1988 just after his death.
The plots of stories
of Joshi are simple from the daily life but the way he narrates the situation
the simple situation becomes interesting. Joshi is an expert in narrating subject with
phrases and the symbols make the stories more readable. Joshi uses known and
new phrases for creating humor and satire. Dabral states that for Joshi the
satire is not the style but a concept of looking at life that makes the story
realistic as per time, place and class. The stories are with full of
spirituality, philosophy and realism. Even the imaginative characters seem as
if they are true from this earth.
Joshi is master of creating and developing his main characters. The characters
in the stories of Bhagwati Prasad are energetic and nearer to the life. The readers
get images of real life from the characters and characterization. One example of characterization is from ‘head
master hirdairam’-
The language and
style of the stories of ‘Himwantwasi’ is his own. Joshi is a specialist of making
words as his slaves. The language is lucid, memorable, with full of phrases and
proverbs. Joshi sees the situation from
newer angle. The timing and order of
events are consistent in his tries. The dialogues
are from daily life and accelerate the speed of story.
The story writer creates mood as per the need of story and that helps
the readers in making images.
Dr. Nand Kishor Dhoundiyal states that Bhagwati Prasad is the ‘Premchand(a
greatest Hindi fiction writer) of Garhwali story world.
