It was common that communities used to fight for land. There are historical accounts about encounters between two tribes for many regions – one for territory. Smith Michael and Govenar (1994) provide details of encounters between African slaves and Red Indians in America in the book’ Mardi Gras Indians’.

   There are folk songs and folklores among Miao tribal groups of China about their encounters with other encroachers in Miao lands.

   Dr.Wilhelam Radloff collected and translated folk songs related to fight between two tribes in his research article –Samples of Folk literature from the North Turkik Tribes ( Oral Tradition, 5/1 – 1990, page 73-90

             Tandi geet: A Tandi folk Song of Ravain tribe, Uttarkashi Area

 The following song is about winning over to Gujjar (a community who roams in the jungle and takes their animals with them) by Ravain tribal community Fandanu. Usually , young the women come to their mayka(mother’s house) sing and dance collectively these Tandi folk songs in Ravain region of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India.

फूली जाली जाई ले, फूली जाली जाई ले

बाणजी के थातीर ले , रये गुन्जेरा आई ले.

फूली जाली जाई ले, फूली जाली जाई ले

भेदा छीनी बांकुरी ले, पाछू देणी फिराई ले

चान्द्या लाई खई ले, चान्द्या लाई खई ले

फांदणु- गुजरू कि हई पड़ी लड़ाई ले ..

फेड़ पक बरा ले पक बरा ले,फेड़ पक बरा ले पक बरा ले

परदेसी गुजरू ले , एक न छोडो घर ले ..

बान का बंगला ले, बानक बगसा ले

फंदाणू मांझी के ले चंदराम सकसा ले

Translation-

Gujar community arrived in Banjan area.

The villagers took their sheep and goats at the plains of Banjani but Gujar made villagers run away from that place. Villagers became angry. There was fierce fight between Fandanu ( A community in Ravain), the villagers firmly decide not to allow encroachment of Gujars in their territory  and decided to kill all Gujars. Chandrama from the fandango community showed bravery and Gujars had to flee
