Mamakot: A Garhwali Story about Conflict between inner consciousness and reality

(Review of Garhwali Story Collection ‘Joni Par Chhapu Kiali?’ (1967) written by Mohan Lal Negi)

                                         Bhishma Kukreti

Garhwali story ‘Mamakot’ of story collection ‘Joni Par Chhapu Kiali?’ by Mohan Lal Negi is about two children Javaru and Surutu. Javaru and Surutu are great friends in the village. They roam together in forest, water source, collect flowers etc. They were waiting school result that in holiday they can visit their Mamakot (mother’s parent’s village). Surutu did not pass the exam and does not visit his Mamakot. However, Javaru ia able to visit his Mamakot. There in ‘Mamakot’, Javru saw many things and ate many eatables. However, there he did not see pine fruit (Chhyunti). The story deals again even after getting many things; even after getting new knowledge; there is something left to attain. The story telling style is very simple and no surprise or twist in the tail. The story is able to depict children curiosity and enthusiasm for newer adventure and then frustration for not getting what others have.
