Bhairon Katha: A Folk Tale of Bhairon deity entering into Langurgarh and other parts of Garhwal

 Bhishma Kukreti

Bhairon is a most wide spread deity of Garhwal and Kumaon. There are hundreds of Bhairon in Kumaon and Garhwal. However, eight Bhairon are major Bhairon.
There are many folk stories related to Bhairon in Kumaon and Garhwal.
One of such folk stories is about Eight Bhairon.
Bhairav came to Kotdwara Bhabhar due to oppression of Mogul.
Seven Sonryal brothers and nine Kothiyal brothers of Rath region visited a shop in Kotdwara for buying salt. They bought salt in night. In early morning, they all started their return journey from Kotdwara for their home. They put salt in Kandi (bag). Bhairav hid in the Kandi of Saunryal brothers. They reached at Langoorgarh or Bhairogarh. There, Seven Saunryal brothers cooked food and started distributing food in seven equal parts. However, every time the eighth part became visible.  Bhairav was calling them but they could not hear it due to just sound.  They all were surprised. Suddenly Kandi broke down. Bhairav came out in the form of Linga. The ling busted into eight parts. One ling part flew away to Chopdakot Chautha, second ling part flew to Syunsi Baijron/bangan; third ling flew to Rath; forth part flew to Kothe of Barthwal; fifth linga part flew to Kothe of Saunriyal; sixth linga part flew to Kothe of nine Kothiyal; seventh part reached to Joshimath. The eighth linga part remained at Langurgarh.
