Disappointment/ Failure of Captain Knox Mission for Nepal

           East India Company wanted to have amicable relation with Nepal. Therefore Company sent Captain Knox as its first Resident in Nepal (1802-03). Though, there had been opposition from various sides about British resident being in Kathmandu. He was instructed to cultivate friendly relation with administration especially with Damodar Pandey and Bum Shah Chautariya (Shafalya Amitya in Failure of Captain’s Mission in Nepal).

            However, Knox was unable to generate cooperation from Nepal Court for East India Company. It was total failure of diplomatic acts of Captain Knox.

        William H. Knox suggested that the Company should capture Kumaon that East India Could send and get goods directly to Tibet.

            Encroachment of East India Company in Tarai Kumaon

      On 10^th November 1801, Governor General Lord Marquees Wellesley (1778-1805as Governor General)) captured Gorkhapur, Devriya, Basti , Azamgarh, Allahabad, Fatehpur, Badayun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur from Vajir or Awadh. Some portion of Tarai Kumaon was caaled the Jamidari of Awadh. In 1803, Company also captured Haridwar, Saharanpur and west Uttar Pradesh from Maratha. That means, by 1803 East India Company had rights on bordering territories of Garhwal and Kumaon.
