Naming of Chhana: Inspiring Garhwali Folk Story about Brave Vrishi Ji Kukreti for Daring Managers

        Jaspur (Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal) is the original village of all Kukreti community of Garhwal. Therefore, there are tens of folk stories in Jaspur about Kukreti community.

            One of famous folk tale is about great, daring, brave Vrishi Ji or Vrikhi Ji. Shrinagar Garhwal King awarded him Veershri title and that is why he was called Vrishi or Vrikhi Ji.

              One of famous folk stories is about his revolt against Shrinagar Garhwal King. The soldiers used to visit villages for collecting grains and other items as Taxes or Raj Kar. The soldiers used horses and labor to take grains (tax items) from villages to Shrinagar. On that time the rout of capital from Jaspur was to Nuagadhkhal, Goom, Taidi (all in Dhangu Patti) , Vyaschatti, Devprayag to Shrinagr.

           Our great grandfather Vrikhi Ji was very much annoyed for the huge or unreasonable quantity of grains and other materials as taxes by the King. Many times, Vrishi Ji requested to tax collectors to take reasonable tax and not to take unreasonable tax (as grains etc). The tax collectors never paid attention on request of Vrishi Ji.

           Once, the tax collectors along with Kingdom soldiers were passing through a place in Jaspur with huge quantity of grains and other materials on the horses. Vrishi Ji cautioned the soldiers and fought with the Kingdom army. Vrishi Ji defeated all the soldiers in wrestling method. The labor with soldiers ran away. Vrishi Ji took the grain and distributed the collected grains among his fellows. Soldiers ran away towards Shrinagar to complain to King.

        The place where brave, revolutionist Vrishi Ji seized the grains (taxes) is called Chheena/Chhina or Chhana. Today’ Chheena or Chhana is a bordering place for Gweel and Jaspur villages. Whenever, people of Jaspur or Gweel visit Chhana or Chheena they memorize the braveness and revolt of their great grandfather Vrishi Ji against Garhwal Kingdom.

  Chheena or Chhana is a historical place and honorable place for all Kukretis wherever they are.
