        British officials collected data for major temples around end of nineteenth century (Atkinson).   There were 100 major temples in Jaunsar and Dehradun;550 temples in Garhwal and 250 in Kumaon. The local deity temples were not counted.

    British officials collected following data of 900 worshiping places of Garhwal-

1-Name of temple, place, village and Patti

2- Name of deity or goddess

3-Position of deity or goddess under Vaishnava, Shaivya or Shakt

4-People or families, villages important for that particular temple

5- Ritual processes of the temple and specific days of specific rituals/events

    There were 350 Shaivya temples in Garhwal In 130 Shaivya temples, there was worship of Shakt too. Out of 130 temple, there were 42 kali temples. Nanda, Chandika, Durga temples were second highest after Shaivya temples. There were other deity temples as Surya, Ganesh and other deities temple.  There were 65 Nagraja temples and Nagraja were put under Vishnu sect. Bhairav was under Shaivya sect temples.
