 There are many version of birth of Nanda Devi one of the famous Goddess of Uttarakhand. The following version is popular in Chamoli Garhwal and Rudraprayag of Garhwal.

मूल संकलन - डा नन्द किशोर हटवाल , देहरादून

          यशोदा तै नंदा मिल्दि

                   (यशोदा को किस प्रकार नंदा मिलती है)

जब मैनावती ने अपनी कन्या को नन्दू के बैराट में मिटटी की खान में दबा दिया औरअपने मायका आ गयी तो यशोदा मटखंडी जाती है और वहां उसे एक कन्या मिलती है।वः कन्या लहू में सनी थी। कन्या मंद मंद हंस रही थी। यशोदा उस कन्या को पोंछती हैऔर गोद में रखती है। फिर यशौदा कन्या को अपने राजमहल ले आती है। अब कन्या के नामकरण की बारी आती है तो ?

मटखांड देखि पै ल्वैढाळि कनया

ल्वैढाळि कनया पै मूल मूल हैंसणि

कनया उठाई पै गोद मा धर्येल्यो

ब्वथायो बुथायि पै ये प्वोंजो मलाशी

पौंछि गे माता अपणा बैराठ

गोद मा धर्याली पै रिष्यों की लाडली

अब होंद कन्या को नामकरण?

                       Yashoda Finds Nanda Devi as girl

 Yashoda comes to Matkhandi and finds a new born child.

The girl was smiling

The girl was into web of blood

Yashoda takes the child and cleans her blood

Yashoda took the child of Sage and brings the girl to her palace  

Now time comes for her naming ceremony
