          There are many versions of Nanda Devi folk stories in Garhwal and Kumaun. This folk story about Nanda Devi version is popular in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Garhwal.

हिमंत ऋषि वै ऋषासौ भाजि गे

राणी मैणावती वै पिछा पिछा लैगी

योगयि सोगयि वै मामला बुग्याऴ।

Narad ji comes to Thakur jee’s house and meets Hemant. Narad ji states that the domestic Cicken/hen/cock is the lowest kind of bird in birds’ world and the lowest kind of man is that lives with his in laws. Listening hard words of Narad ji, Hemant (husband of Mainvati) runs away from his in law’s house. The queen Mainavati follows her husband Hemant. She comes to the area of Nandu and the pregnant Mainavati delivers a child. Mainavati dumps the child into pit of Red soil Mines (matkhandi). Mainavati returns to her parental palace.
