Vidya Sagar Nautiyal was a known figure not only in Garhwal but in Hindi and Russian Literature.
Vidya Sagar Nautiyal was born on 29th September 1933, in Tihri Riyasat. (Nautiyal used to quote- Tihri riyasat par ek Angrej Bhakt Samant ka raj chalta tha) . His father was range-Officer in forest department.
Vidya sagar got education from Pratap Inter College, Tihri Garhwal and intermediate from Dehradun. . While he was studying, he published his first story ‘Mook Balidan’ in the college magazine. Later on he went to Kashi for graduation from Banaras Hindu Vishv Vidyalay . There, he got neighborhood of poet Kedar Nath Singh in Bhagwan Das Hostel. There, young Vidya Sagar got association of various potential poets and other literature creative. Vidya Sagar Nautiyal got impressed by famous Namvar singh for his spoken capability and for his knowledge of Hindi literature. When Vidya Sagar got introduction with Namwar Singh, Namwar singh appreciated stories of very young Vidya Sagar Nautiyal.
While, Vidya Sagar Nautiyal was in Kashi, the literay word became known about his capability as story writer. Many literary figures of their time appreciated Bhains ka Katya’ a Hindi story by Nautiyal. Dr. V Charnishov translated the above story in Russian language. Communism influenced very much on Viadya sagar and he was always a communist.
Vidya sagar fought election from Dev Prayag and he was MLA of Uttarpradesh Assembaly from Dev Prayag constituency.
Vidya Sagar was asocial and political activist who fought for deprived ones .

Stories of Vidya Sagar Nautiyal are based on day to day life of rural Garhwal.
Manju Singh produced a television-film ‘Nath’ on his story for Doordarshan. Door Darshan telecasted the film more than ten times as the viewers liked the film and story.
Many organizations awarded Nautiyal for his service to literature.
Vidya Sagar Nautiyal passed away on 12nd Feb 2012, in Bangalore.
