Urkhela ki Didi: A Garhwali Folk Story in Modern style

Critical Review of Modern Garhwali Stories -141 ‘Urkhela ki Didi ‘ a Modern Garhwali Story by Dr/Ram Prasad Dobhal ( Rant Raibar, 13/10/2010) -a critical Review and Analysis Let Us Celebrate Hundredth Year of Modern Garhwali Stories! Review by Bhishma Kukreti [Commentary on Folk Stories in Modern style; Garhwali Folk Stories in Modern style; Uttarakhandi Folk Stories in Modern style; Mid Himalayan Folk Stories in Modern style; Himalayan Folk Stories in Modern style; North Indian Folk Stories in Modern style; Indian Folk Stories in Modern style; Indian subcontinent Folk Stories in Modern style; SAARC Countries Folk Stories in Modern style; South Asian Folk Stories in Modern style; Asian Folk Stories in Modern style; Oriental Folk Stories in Modern style] Stone, Packer and Hoopes (The Short Stories: An Introduction, 1976) state that the difference between folk or early stories and modern stories are that early stories or folk stories were the vehicles of assertion. Further they affirm that early stories or folk stories spoke about the whole community, modern fiction is the work of individuals or authors and modern story authors search. There is a famous Garhwali folk story that for protecting from Bhoot or evil souls you just catch the tail of caw and evil souls can’t harm you (Garhwal ki Lok Kathayen, by Bhishma Kukreti, 1985). The folk story is simple. Dr. Ram Prasad Dobhal narrates the same story through newer methodology or style. Dr. Dobhal took time in characterization and creates a sound suspense for attracting the readers in his Garhwali story Urkhela ki Didi ‘. Dr. Ram Prasad did not inform readers that this is folk story. The narration is in newer fiction style.
