Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -62

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)
(Narrated by Late Dharma Nand Jakhmola of village Jaspur, Pauri Garhwal)
[Late Dharma Nand Jakhmola was a Mantrik but used to perform Mantra ritual in his village Jaspur, Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal. He used to perform Mantra of Rangud Mantran, Rai Mantran, Gaunt Mantran etc for eradicating smaller diseases and effects of Bhut (chhalen) etc.  He was my neighbor. Once, I asked him that he should teach Mantra to all villagers that everybody eradicates his or her trouble. Late Dharma Nand Jakhmola told me a story]

Jantra –Mantra is a Goodh Vidya (secret and sacred knowledge). Goodh Vidya means a complex knowledge. Goodh Vidya should not be written. Goodh Vidya should be remembered and should be taught to only one able disciple though Shruti (oral or telling) method. No Goodh Vidya Guru should teach Goodh Vidya to more than one disciple. My father taught me the Jantra and Mantra but he did not teach to my other brothers. I remembered all Mantra when I was alone with my Guru.
Once upon a time many century back, beyond the other side of hill, there was a village. There was a Jantra-Mantra performer Garudi in that village. He was a great Mantrik and Tantrik in that village. He had oral knowledge of Garud Mantra, Mor Mantra, Mirgau Singau Mantar, Samp Kate ka Mantra, Bicchu ka Mantra, Dubal-Kunjau Mantrau, Rangud Mantra and so on. He had knowledge of hundreds of mantra by hand. Nobody was knowledgeable as he was as far as mantra performance is concerned. Garudi learned all hundreds of mantra from his father who was greater Guru than him. While dying, father of Garudi cautioned his son Garudi that he would not teach Mantra more than a disciple. His father advised Garudi that he should teach Mantra to a pure soul and strong will powered disciple.
Garudi became great Mantrik and Tantrik and grew his fame all over the region.  One day, a delish thought came in his mind and he started teaching Mantra-Tantra to all. Every person became expert of Tantra and mantra in his village.
Now, people started performing Mantra for taking out spike from the body. Everybody started using Mantra and Tantra for smallest possible trouble. Nobody was interested to take action for every job. Instead of execution and action, everybody was following Mantrik and Tantrik power. Everybody became lazy in working. Laziness brought envy and envy brought quarrel among all. Quarrel brought wrong deeds among all. Now, everybody started using Mantra and Tantra to harm other including own brothers and sisters. Everybody started wasting their energy and knowledge to harm others. The Lord of Mantra and Tantra became unhappy watching the acts of the villagers of Garudi. The Lord cursed the villagers and there was an earth quack and the whole village was grounded into earth. Nobody could save life due to earth quack.
From that day, no Mantrik teach Mantra and Tantra more than a disciple.
