Use of Parody in creating Classic satire by Harish Juyal

        Parody is defined as “Parody (also called spoof, take off, send –up or lampoon)  is work created for intimating,  making fun of , or commenting on original work –its subject, author, style or some of other target –by means of satiric or ironic imitation.(Wikipedia)”

 Literature Theorist Linda Hutcheon states, “Parody is important but is not always at the expense of parodied text”

Simon Dentith states, “Parody- is any cultural practice which provides a relatively polemical allusive imitation of another cultural production or practice”

   Harish Juyal is one of the prominent signatures of humorous -satirical Garhwali poetries.

 Harish Juyal did experiments in creating humorous -satirical Garhwali poetries. One of his tools for creating humor and satire in poetries is creating parodies.

Vladimir Nabokov states that satire is lesion and parody is game. Harish Juyal understands the intension of Vladimir very well   as other satirists understand.

  In the following stanza Harish creates parody of a classic Sanskrit Shloka defining the five important characteristics of a student. Harish just tilts the characteristics and satirizes the today’s students.

मैच चेष्टा , ब्वगठ्या  ध्यानम , सुंगर निद्रा तथैव च

डिग्री  हारी,  किताब त्यागी , विद्यार्थी पंच  लक्षणम

Lamb Meat Focusing, Pig like Sleeping, Degree Stealing, Book Hating  

Bruce Campbell writes that parody is another form of comedy and it applies the following paradoxical poem by Harish-

    पुजै निमंत्रण

  

भेज रहे हैं पुजै निमंत्रण प्रियवर तुम्हें बुलाने को। 
हे ब्वगठ्या के प्रेमी तुम भूल न जाना खाने को।।

  The Mantras in Garhwal are famous and most of Garhwalis know the first lines of Mantras. Harish created a couple of Garhwali poetries imitating Garhwali Mantras. His aim was not just imitate the mantra style but by taking cue from mantra, he lambastes on alcohol drinking -

माता ब्रांडी ,पिता ओल्डमौंक  

ओम नमो गुरु को आदेशा 

माता ब्रांडी ,पिता ओल्डमौंक  

तीन लोक तारिणी  , थ्री ऐक्स डागिणी , लाल नागिणी  

चेतक बियर को आदेशा 

व्हिस्की पीर को आदेशा 

टिंचरी जोगिणी कु जुहार 

ठर्रा जोगी कू नमस्कार 

Parody and satire are more than mere comic convictions (B.E. Bonstetter) Harish took Sanskrit Shlokas as challenge for parodying the Shlokas for making satire as follows. Harish uses parody as a medium for social criticism -

विश्वेश्वराय  'सुरा' पिये , प्याज की दाणी म घुट्टी लगे

भेळउन्द प्वडाय मुंड कच्याय , कुकरोन तैकू थ्वबड़ो चटाय

जुयाल स्रोत्रम

              भ्रात्री स्नेह उपदेसिका

ख़ास भायुं मा खुंकर्यूळ ह्वाओ  एका कारिज मा हैंकु नि आयो

इका उन्नति मा हैंकु जळन्ति म मनुष्य रुपेण ढयबराश्चरंती

  Harish takes wrong happening left and right though following parody (a Shloka)

                   हरिओम् तत्सत्

जुमळी दिदा ब्वाद हरिओम तत्सत , सम्सूत रातिम ब्वादा सरांद

भैर कनु रौंद नमो शिवाय: ,भितरम जैक भुटुवा खुज्यांद

    पुजै निमंत्रण

  

भेज रहे हैं पुजै निमंत्रण प्रियवर तुम्हें बुलाने को। 
हे ब्वगठ्या के प्रेमी तुम भूल न जाना खाने को।।

 For Harish the style is just a medium and he uses Parody the best medium. Harish is master of words and is successful in creating humorous satire by Parody.
