Jabar Singh Kaintura contributed Garhwali literature by creating short stories and poetries. Jabar Singh Kaintura was born in Ringoli village , Lotsu Patti of Tehri Garhwal adjacent to Shrinagar.

Jabar Singh Kaintura was a union activist too.

Jabar Singh Kaintura published around 15 Garhwali poems in Hilans, Alaknanda and other periodicals. Madan Duklan included his poem in Angwal a 300 Garhwali poetry collection.

His poem ‘Hamara Auji’ is a portrait of a customary Dhol player Gyanu.

The poem ‘ Chitthi Man Tain’ by Jabar is praising his mother land Garhwal and its natural beauty.

‘Azadi’ poem by Kaintura is a satirical poem and criticizes the wrong doings by politicians, administration.

Gwain (Gwairan) poem is about illustration of daily life of a she shepherd.

Jabar Singh satirizes the organizers of International Youth Year in ‘ Jwanun Sal’. Kaintura observes that in his society , the child enters into old life and now that old generation is celebrating youth year as old leader Babu Jagjivan ram was made Youth congress President by Indira Gandhi.

The ‘ Meri Charyun’ or Like Me is another satire criticizing the corrupt mentality in the society. Jabar Singh states that everybody is interested in getting money by corrupt or easy means. Those avail corrupt methods and earn extra money don’t criticize corruption but those are unable to get money by corrupt methods start criticizing corruption.

Basgyal is illustration of rain in Garhwal hills.

Jabar Singh uses dialects from Lotsu Tehri region and uses common Garhwali phrases.

Hilans editor late Arjun Singh Gusain, Alaknanda editor Swarup Dhoundiyal and famous poet Puran Pant Pathik appreciated poetries by Jabar Singh Kaintura.

रचना -- जबर सिंह कैंतुरा

बादळू गगड़ाट,

गदरौं स्वींसाट ,

स्वीली डर ,

झिड़ बिड़ो , भितर भैर ,

लुकीन स्याळ -यूँ मैनों बसग्याळ

झंगोरू , क्वादु , मार्छु ग्वडणू ,

नै ब्योली मन खुद्यणू।

संग्त धांणी -धांणी / गदरौं ल्यंगड़ा,

कंडळि का झ्यंकड़ा /हर्यूं हर्यूं घास बसग्याळ मॉस।

सार्यों -सार्यों रोपण होणी ,

सुज्जि -भुज्जि अर गोन्द्कि नौणी।

कौल्या कंडळि /भुट्याणु -अंगाळि,

घिंघरू -किनगोड़ रिक्कै -डौर ,

बिजलि चलकणी , ज्वंक्कि बिल्कणी

सौणै कुरेड़ि भ्वीं फुंड लिटणी

बाळणि भैंसि छक्की दूध देणी।

पहाड्यूं तै खुसी का रंग मा हरिद्वारी विषैला नंग बि मील।

उत्तराखंड दिवस का दिन गाजा बाजा बजदन , स्वाळ -पक्वड़ बणदन अर दगड़म बरजातौ इखारो शंक बि बजद।

हरिद्वार पुरण तीर्थ स्थान च , हरिद्वार पवित्र तीर्थ स्थान च अर हरिद्वार जिला पहाड्यूं कुण शूल पीड़ा च।

हरिद्वार कबि गढ़वाल मा छौ तब बि आफत छौ , हरिद्वार जब गढ़वाळ मा नि छौ तब बि खानपुर डकैत राजा वजै से हरिद्वार आफत छौ , अब आधुनिक राजा मदन कौशिक, कुंवर प्रणव सिंग का कारण हरिद्वार पहाड्यूं कुण आफत च।

उत्तराखंड आंदोलन ह्वे छौ बल पहाड़ी एमएलए , एमपी होला जो पहाड़ का बारा मा स्वाचला पर अब त हर साल परिसीमन का डंडा घुमण से सत्ता पीठ मा पहाड्यूं बांठै जगा पर हरद्वारी लाल, उधम सिंग अर बीएसपी-एसपी वळ गैर पहाड़ी बैठणा छन।

उत्तराखंड आंदोलन ह्वे छौ कि पहाड़ों मा नव कृषि तैं विशेष महत्व मीलल पर उत्तराखंडी नेताओं टक्क तो हरिद्वार अर उधम सिंग नगर का बासमती पर लगीं रौंद त पहाड़ का खेत बंजर पोड़ल ही।

पहाड़ी तहरीक चौल छौ बल पहाड़ों मा उद्यम खुलल , पहाड्यूं तै रोजगार मीलल पलायन रुकल। पर उद्यम हिस्सेदारी तो हरिद्वार -उधम सिंग नगर ली गेन अर मेरा पहाड़ तो ठूंठ का ठूंठ खड़ा देखता रह गया।

उत्तराखंड आंदोलन ह्वे छौ बल मैदानी छल -बल से पहाड्यूं सणि मुक्ति मीलली , उत्तराखंड आंदोलन ह्वे छौ बल पहाड़ी क्षेत्र का नेतृत्व पहाड्यूं हथ मा होलु किन्तु हरिद्वार उत्तराखंड का गौळगंड बणिक पहाड़ियत तैं इ खतम करणु च ।

उत्तराखंड आंदोलन चल छौ बल पहाड़ी प्रदेश मा पहाड़ी भाषा राज कारली , राणी बणली पर हरिद्वारी मदन कौशिक सरीखा अड़ंगाबाज पहाड़ी भाषाओं तै विधवा बणाण पर अड्यां छन।
शिव पार्वती युग मा हरिद्वार क्षेत्र का कारण पहाड़ी तब बि लुटेंदा छा , अकबर क्या अंग्रेजूं टैम पर बि पहाड़ी लुटेंदा छा अर अब सतपाल महाराज समर्थक अर मदन कौशिक समर्थकों मध्य लाठी चलदन ।

हरिद्वार तैं देखिक पहाड्यूं तैं हिसर , किनग्वड़ अर रड़न्या -फिसलण्या रस्ता याद आंदन ।

उत्तराखंड का वास्ता हरिद्वार पहाड़ीपन समाप्त करणो एक औजार च। पहाड़ी अस्मिता को चीरहरण करणो वास्ता हरिद्वार दुशासन च। हरिद्वार पहाड्यूं वास्ता गौळ कु फोड़ा -फुन्सी च , फोड़ा नि फुड़दा त मोरदा छां , फोड़ा फुड़दा त मोरदा छां अर इनि रौंदा त कोढ़ी जन जिंदगी राली।

अटल जी तुम त बीमार पोड़ी गेवां अर पहाड्यूं वास्ता इन उत्तराखंड दे गेवां बल ना त खुस हुयांद , ना रुयांद अर ना इ इनि सयांद।

At the right hilly area of Alaknanda (Hamilton used Vishnu Ganga) there is Badrinath . There were 20-30 huts. Temple priests and workers lived on those huts. The temple was famous all over India and there were villages for income to the temple. However, the temple architect was a simple one. The height was 40-50 feet. The top was ‘Amalak’ was small and was surrounded by bronz plates with a small top by gold. Hamilton wrote with sarcasm that the temple was made by eternal power and when there was earth quake in 1803 human hands had to protect it. Daulat Rav Sindia rebuilt the temple.

Hamilton informed that 50000 annual pilgrims used to visit the temple in summer. However, Trail stated that the numbers was 27000 in 1820 and income was 15750 rupees excluding gold and silver and the other income was from 170 Garhwal villages and 56 Kumaon villages.

Other Places

There were a few huts in Rudraprayag.

There were 6-8 houses in Karna Prayag. Karna idol was there in a Math.

In 1820, Nandprayag was a barren place. The traders used to come there temporarily. People used to show a couple of idols on stones to pilgrims.

There were 150 houses in Mana village. The houses were built by stone with wooden roofs. Mana people used to migrate in south valleys in winter. There were 22 villages in Dhaulaghati and villagers used to come down in winter.

Gamsalo, Malari and Niti were main villages. There were 40 houses in Gamsalo. Houses were built by stone with wood logs. A couple of houses were four story. Roof were wooden. Domestic animals were tagged on ground floors. Balconies were made by wood with engraved idols of Ganesh or other deities. Those inhabitants were called Marchha or Dobasa.

Kotdwara was known for police post. Doggadda and Lansdowne were in established at that time.

What do I do with my hands!

The biggest problem for smokers and alcohol drinkers is attending alcohol less dinner party in hotels or wedding halls. When there is alcohol party and smoking is permissible, the smokers and drinkers can use their hands as per need.

However, when there is no alcohol and you can’t smoke in party premise, there is problem for smokers and habitual drinkers for what do they do with their hands. Smokers and drinkers are habitual for actions with their hands. You reach at party hall at seven pm and dinner would start by nine. So, you face problem of what do you do with your hands. As a smart smoker and as a hard drinker, I shall tell you ‘what to do with your hands’ in nonalcoholic and nonsmoking dinner parties.

First, spend your maximum time near door that you may raise your hands for Namaste. Keep on doing namaste even to younger ones that you may keep your hands busy. You will be doing ‘namaste’ for keeping your hands busy but people will praise for your well-mannered, courteous and egoless nature.

When you are sitting on chair, keep rubbing, pressing or scratching the chair arms.

After some interval, rub your hands, close and open your fist or regularly put your finger into your nose or ear and then clean by handkerchief. Sometime, you should clean your eyes by fingers. You may scratch your back neck back and sometimes the calf. However, never scratch below your belly and above your thigh areas as people may perceive you are suffering skin disease.

You may rub your cheeks to offer actions for your hands. Better you rub children cheeks than yours but never try rubbing lady’s cheeks for providing works to your hand. It is injurious, hazardous and illegal to rub other’s wife’s cheeks in public place or alone.

You may cross your hands as cricketers do at third slip. You may do soundless clap at intervals but purposeless loud clap in a party are dangerous, injurious, ruinous to your image.

In lawn party, you may do some bowling action, batting or catching actions.

My top most advice is leave alcohol and smoking.

सौरभ बहगुणा -अरे ! कलम दास ! यी सब गणमान्य व्यक्ति छन अर तू रै बै से बात करणु छै। जी लगैक बात नि कौर सकणी छे ? तमीज से अर जी लगैक बात कौर।

जोगी दास (कलम दासक नौनु ) - क्यों बै सौरभ ! म्यार बुबा जी त्यार बुबा से उमर मा बड़ छन अर तेरी जीब जळ गे जु ऊंकुण तमीज तहजीब , जी से सम्बोधन नि करणी छे।

सौरभ - अरे हम बहुगुणा ...

जोगी दास - तो क्या ?

सौरभ - मि , मि ...

तिनि सौरभ का कंदूड़म -देख राजनीति मा गधा कुण बि बुबा बुलण पड़द अर बिट्ठ नीति बुल्दी बल टैम पड़न पर ल्वार , तम्वट अर दासौ दगड़ नाता रिस्ता से बात करण पोड़दि।

त्रिवेंद्र रावत - जी कलम दास जी ! तुमन सै ब्वाल बल मि सुकिक काँटा ह्वे ग्यों।

सतपाल रावत -दुःख मा म्यार मूछों पर ताकत इ नि रै गे।

विजय बहुगुणा - म्यार त बुरा हाल छन। ज्यू बुल्याणु च। नाक इ कटै द्यों।

कलम दास - ह्यां पर ! या बेबगता बीमारी क्या च ? तुम किलै सुकिं मुकीं कठकी बण्या छा ?

सतपाल - क्या च। हम सब परेशान , चिंतित अर खौफ मा छंवां।

जोगी दास -ह्यां पर क्या बजर पोड़ जु तुमर भूक , तीस अर हौग बंद हुईं च।

विजय बहुगुणा - हमर संस्कृति समाप्ति को कगार पर च। उ क्या च कि हमर रीति रिवाज निबटणा छन ।

सतपाल रावत - हमर संस्कृति रसातल को जाणी च।

त्रिवेंद्र रावत - हमर संस्कृति क नामलेवा क्वी नी च।

कलम दास - अरे संस्कृति तुमरि , दुःख तुमर तो बचाओ ना अपण संस्कृति।

जोगी दास - हाँ ! संस्कृत अर संस्कृति से हम शिल्पकारुं क्या लीण दीण ?

तिनि - नै नै ! तुम ही तो हमारी संस्कृति का संवाहक छंवां। तुम ही हमारी संस्कृति का चालक -निर्वाहक छंवां।

कलम दास - हैं ? संस्कृति तुम्हारी अर संवाहक हम ? यू क्या घा
ल -मेल च ? घंघतोळ च।

जोगी दास - तुम कैं संस्कृति बचाणो बात करणा छंवां ?

विजय बहुगुणा - ढोल वादन संस्कृति।

जोगी - अरे ढोल वादन संस्कृति तुम्हारी च ? हैं ? ढोल पर पूड़ हम चढ़ौंदा , लांकुड़ हम बणौंदा , ढोल हम बजांदा अर संस्कृति तुमारी ?

सतपाल रावत - नै नै संस्कृति तो हमारी इ च।

जोगी - वाह ! वह रे संस्कृति का ठेकेदारों ! कमर हमर अर कमर मा चढ़िक रौंस तुम लेल्या ? कांध हमारी अर बंदूक तुम चलैल्या , गौड़ हमर अर दूध तुम छकैल्या हैं ?

सब - नै नै ! ढोल वादन संस्कृति बचण चयाणी च।

कलम दास - अच्छा चलो रण द्यावो यीं बहस तै कि कैक संस्कृति च। इन बताओ तुम क्या करणा छंवां ?

त्रिवेंद्र रावत - माननीय मुख्यमंत्री की पहल पर हरिद्वारम विशाल ढोल वादन याने नाद नमो प्रोग्रैम उराये गे। उत्तराखंड से 1500 से अधिक ढोल बादक ढोल -दमाऊ बजाल अर यो एक विश्व रिकॉर्ड होलु। आप तै उख ढोल वादन का वास्ता निमंत्रण बि दिए गे।

कलम दास - हाँ सूण च बल भौत इ बड़ो झलसा हूणु च बल.

सब - हाँ हाँ संस्कृति बचाणो बान यू एक क्रांतिकारी कार्यक्रम च। तो आप बि चलणा छन ना ? तुम गढ़वाल का सिरमौरी ढोल बजंदेर छंवां तो तुमर आण आवश्यक च।

कलम दास - तो उख अवश्य ही ढोल वादन से पैल पूजन बि होलु ?

विजय बहुगुणा - हाँ हां ! प्रसिद्ध व्यास गोपाल जी पूजा कारल अर ऊंक दगड़ 108 बामण बि वेद ध्वनि का साथ पूजा शुरू कारल।

जोगी दास - तो ऊंक रौणो -खाणो तजबिज बि होल्यू हैं ?

विजय बहुगुणा - किलै न बिलकुल अलग से ऊंकण प्रबंध च। नाद नमो भूमि से अलग , बिलकुल अलग से।

कलम दास - बिलकुल अलग ?

सतपाल रावत - हाँ अरे बड़ा व्यास छन अर वो 108 ब्राह्मण बि बड़ा विद्वान् छन तो ऊंकण पंडाल से अलग व्यवस्था करण इ छौ।

कलम दास - तो लोग बाग़ ऊंक पैर बि छुवल , गंड गंड नतमस्तक बि होला ही ना ?

त्रिवेंद्र रावत - हाँ जन रिवाज च तनी। मीन बि लम्पसार ह्वेक चरण वंदना करण।

कलम दास - ठीक च हम तैयार छंवां। किन्तु छुटी सी शर्त छन।

विजय बहुगुणा - क्या ? क्या ? शर्त ?

कलम दास -हाँ ! पैल हमर बिस्तरा बि व्यासुं कमरा मा लगण चयेंद , व्यास लोग बि वीं पंगत मा खाणा खाला जैं पंगत मा मि अर मेरी विरादरी का दास खाला। अर ..

सतपाल रावत - अर क्या ?

कलमदास - अर ढोल की पिठै व्यास ना हम खुद तैयार करला व हम ही व्यास लोगुं तै पिठै लगौला। अर ...

त्रिवेंद्र रावत - अर ?

कलम दास - अर हरेक व्यास तै हमर चरण वंदना करण पोड़ल , गंड गंड लम्पसार ह्वेका चरण वंदना।

सब - इन कनै ह्वे सकद ? धर्म विरुद्ध , संस्कार विरुद्ध। नि ह्वे सकद। व्यास ब्राह्मण ढोल वादकों चरण वंदना कारल ? बिलकुल नहीं ,

कलमदास - नि ह्वे सकद ? ना ?

सब - नहीं बिलकुल नहीं।

कलमदास - मतलब -हम तै ओ सम्मान नि मिलण जो उच्च ब्राह्मणो तै मिलण ?

सब - असंभव तै हम सम्भव नि कौरी सक्दवां।

कलमदास - ठीक च तुम सम्मान नि दे सकदा तो हम बि आज से ढोल बजाण छुड़ना छंवां। अपने लड़कों से ढोल बजवावो , जो करना है सो करो पर बगैर सम्मान के हमें संस्कृति बचाने की आशा ना करना। जावो जावो और अपनी संस्कृति खुद बचावो।
