Folk Songs of Kinnar community of Garhwal
Kinnar are inhabitant of Malini river bank of Bhabar , near Kotdwara. There is clear description of Kinnar in Mahabharata. There is description of Kinnar in episode of Shakuntala in Mahabharata. Kinnar are heirs of deity nymph Menka (the mother of Shakuntala). There is big stone in ruined temple in Malini bank , Syupani jungle, (Maheda Katal) called Menka shila and is believed that Menka is there in the form of big stone. These present Kinnars used to boost rightly that they are finest artists of Garhwal and that characteristics came from the finest artist of her era Menka. According to Shrinidhi Sidhantalankar and Dr Shiva Nand Nautiyal, Kinnar communities live in Jaigaon, Sheela, Dyunla, Dhari in Bhabar villages.
Kinnars are one of the oldest inhabitants of Garhwal whose history goes to beyond when Mahbharata written (Shakuntala –Bharat) .
They dance sing same types of dance-song as common Garhwalis do.
The following song is an example of Kinnar folk song:
