On 26^th January 1815, John Adam wrote a letter to Edward Gardner for altering attack on Shrinagar Garhwal. Adam wrote,” Now, Hearsay would not march towards Shrinagar. Now, Hearsay would participate in Kumaon Campaign and would work under Lieutenant Colonel Gardner.

Around end of January 1815, Edward Gardner and L. Colonel Gardner made three ways formulas strategy for Kumaon Campaign-

1-L.Colonel Gardner would marchto Kumaon through Chilkiyakot with his temporary army

2- Small artillery would march towards Almora though Bamoli/Buroni Ghat

3- Hearsay would march through Timalghat towards Kali River valley with his temporary army

The strategy was to surround Kumaon from three direction.

Governor General was taking action with care after Khalanga defeat. He was cautious about hills of Uttarakhand and Himachal. The temporary Rohila soldiers were not devotee as Hindu soldiers. British army could not offer suitable training to temporary Rohila soldiers too. Rohila cavalry was expert in battles in plains but was not suitable in fighting Gurkha in Hills of Kumaon and Garhwal. Therefore, for capturing Kumaon, it was essential that British gain sympathy of Kumaunis of hills.

High command instructed Gardner brothers that at every stage they have to gain the sympathy of local Kumaunis. Fagan instructed L. Colonel Gardner that the British army should gain sympathy of Kamin, Sayanas and other influential people of Kumaon villages coming in Campaign Path. By getting sympathy from local Kumaunis British army could hand over the camp to Kumaunis.

The East India Company High Command instructed L. Colonel Gardner and Edward Gardner in details for Kumaon Campaign. L. Colonel Gardner had to follow the instruction of Edward Gardner. Governor General had full confidence that both the officers would act smoothly for Kumaon Campaign.

On 21^st December 1814, from Nazibabad Camp, adjutant General G.H. Fagan wrote letter for L. Colonel Gardner,” High command decided that there would be attack on Kumaon from two sides. The suggestion is that light attack would be campaigned through Chilkiyaghat and heavy attack to be campaigned through Timlaghate –Pilibhit-Bareli region. However, you both should decide where to act attack effectively. After capturing the Ghat you should establish temporary camp at nearby Hill top. By establishing temporary camp for Guns you would campaign further easily

You should establish a depot near Almora that you easily capture Almora city.

British Capturing Gurkha Spies

At the same period , Gurkha/Nepal officers in Kumaon also started their spies in Kashipur and other plains areas for getting information about British army. Most probably, the spies were Kumaunis, Garhwalis and a few people from plains. Gurkha/Nepalese officers used pay to spies. On 24^th January 1815, John Adam sent a letter to Edward Gardner wherein he detailed the identities such as dressing etc of Gurkha spies working in plains. There was an poster /advertising poster wherein there was instruction for capturing Gurkha spies and their papers. Gardner copied that advertising poster and distributed in Police Camps of Kashipur. By that act, British army captured many Gurkha spies and papers with them.
