History of Garhwal King Shyamshah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -111

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -357

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

There are four different lists available for Garhwal Kings. All lists cover same Kings after Man Shah (Manshah). There is a name Duleramshah that name is listed in Maulram and Almora Lists.  Duleram Shah is not mentioned in other two lists. Jahangirnama mentioned the Jagirdar of Shrinagar as Shyamsingh. That means till then Garhwal kings were using Singh or Pal at the end of their names.
Maularam in ‘Gadhrajvanshkavya’ described a couple of incidents about Shyam Shah. According to Bhaunpal folklore, there would be hurdle free Kingdom till fifty second Kings. According to Maularam, Shyamshah was fifty second Kings in Pal dynasty.

History aspects of Long Plague Epidemic in North India

In 1616, Plague started in Punjab. Then Plague spread over through all North India. Hindus died more than Muslim as their population was more. Thousands of people died of Plague. Plague was there in North India, Gujarat, and Khandes for eight years and Kashmir was more affected. That means Garhwal and Kumaon were also affected by Plague. However, less historical account is available about Plague in Kumaon and Garhwal.
There are many folk stories among villagers of Garhwal about families leaving their native village due to epidemic and plague too. There is one folk story among Kukretis of Jaspur (Malla Dhangu, South Pauri Garhwal) that a couple of Kukreti families left Jaspur because of epidemic.
There was great Famine in India in Jahangir period. It might have happen that people from plains migrated to Garhwal due to shortage of food in plains of India.

Hudki has an important position in Garhwali and Kumaoni Folk dramas from old age. There are mentions of Hudkya the Hudki music instrument Player in Katyuri period and Dulal Shah in History.
The drum of Hudki is made by Khinn or Khimari wood. The frame of Hudki is rectangular. The Hudki wall is about six and quarter inch wide and diameter of drum side (goat intestine leather) is about six –seven inches. The diameter in centre of drum is about 8-9 inches. The side leather are connected to cotton rope as in Dholak. Hudki is played by one hand (right hand) while it is hung on shoulder.
Hudki is played in religious ritual performances.

Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar

Notes on Traditional Folk Games/Sports from Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar (Uttarakhand Folk Games) Part -3
Event or and Marriage Traditional/Folk games of Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar part- 1

Narration: Bhishma Kukreti (Folk Literature Research Scholar)

This is a joyful folk game played in Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar at the time of Haldihath (Nuptial Bath) in marriage. When the bride or groom taking bath by fresh water just after Haldihath, people around   start throwing Turmeric water (diluted from turmeric paste left over) on usually those who are either brother in law or sister in law (Devar –Bhabhi, Jija Sali, Samdhi Samdhan, Jija Sala, Samdi –Smadi)  . The person tries to paste the left over paste or to throw turmeric water on other person (of same gender or opposite gender) and other person tries to protect or tries to revert back. When the person is successful to paste and or throw turmeric water on targeted person the audience pleasingly splat hands.
The game runs about half an hour to one hour.

History Review of Bharat Kavi Bahuguna the Court Poet of Garhwal King Manshah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -110

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -356

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In the court of Garhwal King Manshah, Bharat Bahuguna was Sanskrit poet and astrologer. Bharat Bahuguna was born in Pokhari , Chalansyun, Devalgarh Pargana, Pauri Garhwal. His father name was Ram Ji.
Bharat Bahuguna created a Sanskrit ‘Manodaya Kavya’. Only four parts of ‘Manodaya Kavya’ are available. Medhkar Shastri Bahuguna copied ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in 1782. Shambhu Prasad bahguna published ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in his Virat Hridaya book.
‘Manodaya Kavya’ is a not long poetry book but is gracious from literature point of view. Poet Bharat Bahuguna describes the battle of Painkhand very effectively. There are ample uses of figure of speeches especially for praising Garhwal King Manshah and his predecessors. The poetries also reflect History of Garhwal. There are effects of Kalidas on the poetries.
                       Bharat Bahuguna as Astrologer

There are mentions of Jyotikray in Akbarnama and Jahangir Nama. Bahugun-Banshcharit (1991) states that Buddhi Vilash Bahguna went to see Akbar and he made Janmaptri of Akbar and got title of Jytikhray.
Bahguna-Vanshcharit also states that Bharat Kavi went to see Janhagir and got title of Jyotishray.
Tajuk Janhagiri and Jahangirnama describe the astrological knowledge of Jyotishray. Jahangir, twice, also rewarded Jyotishray by cash. Jahangirnama describes about Jyotishray in the year 1622. It means, Bharat Bahuguna or Jyotishray created Manodaya Kavya before 1622.
