Rapture of Affection for Parents in Garhwali Folk Dramas

गढवाली लोक नाटकों / लोक  नृत्य -गीतों में प्रतिवात्सल्य रस

Review of Characteristics of Garhwali Folk Drama, Folk Theater/Rituals and Traditional Plays part -67

                                    Bhishma Kukreti
The rapture of affection for parents is demonstrated by deep relationship between parents and children. The daughter or son usually talks about her/his parents favoring, protecting, and adoring their children.
Here, in the following folk song and dance , a motherless married woman is remembering her mother that had her mother would alive she would invite her (daughter) to Mayaka (Parental home) in spring time.
The following folk song also depicts images of post spring months of Garhwal.

The above folk song is very good example of rapture of affection for parents.

Gyana ar Binjara: Garhwali Folk Story for Branding Managers

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional stories, Community Narratives for Effective Managers, Effective executives, Effective Boss, Effective Supervisors or Stories for Effective management, management Lesson from Garhwali Folk Literature from Garhwal, part- 45

Collected and edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

Usually, in Garhwal the names of crop fields or farming fields are based on the characteristics of the farm place and not on the basis of personal name. For example where ‘Laya’ is grown called ‘Layad’, ‘Banjan’ means the place where Oak (banj) forest is there, ‘Chaudi’ means the field are long and wide, ‘twal’ means the land is with lime etc.
Below in south of village Jaspur, Malla Dhangu (Pauri Garhwal), there is a place called ‘Gyana’ and in the east a place called Binjara. This author asked his elder uncle late Shri Murlidhar Kukreti about name of place (farming field) based on personal name.
My uncle told me the following story for such variation.
There was Gorkhyani or Gorakha (Nepal) rule over Garhwal more than a decade. Gorakha rulers and government servants were the cruelest most in our history. The soldiers used to burn the standing crops or used to plough standing crops. To kill a human being on petty mistakes was a common system in Gorkha rule. Gorkhyani or Gorakha rule is remembered with fear due to their aggressive, oppressive ways of ruling.
Ghansali was the military base of Gorkha soldiers and administrators for Dhangu, Udaypur and Dabralsyun.  Among the Gorakha administrative officers, Gyan Singh and Binjara Singh were the cruelest.
When Gorakha rule came to an end, the Gorakha soldiers started running for their countries Nepal. People of Dhangu were so much terrorized by Gyan Singh and Binjara that people wanted to kill them. People started following Gyana and Binjara to kill both of them. Gyana ran and was caught in the southern territory of Jaspur village. People killed him there. Binjara was caught in the east of Jaspur in Gweel territory.
Now, where Gyan Singh was killed is called Gyana and where Binjara Singh was killed is called as Binjara’.

The King was Owner of Land
As per custom, the King was owner of land, kingdom, forest, minerals and all properties of the Kingdom.
The King would take appropriate decision to distribute the kingdom property and wealth. The King was customary authorized to award, reward, punish and could provide death sentence to anybody. All these rights were till he was King. Before being king or after thrown out as King he did not have those rights of the King.
Initially when Chand Kings were ruler of small territory, they were called ‘Raja’. Initially, their territory or fortes was called ‘Rajbunga’. Even when Chandra or Chand kings were under they used to have title of ‘Maharaja’. In inscriptions, Gyan Chandra’s title was ‘Raja’ in 1389 and in 1418, he his title was “Rajdhiraj’.
The title of Bharti Chandra was ‘Maharaja’ in 1477 and under the title of Doti Kalyan Chandra was ‘Mahadhiraj’ in 1733.
Anant Dev called Bajbahadur and his predecessors as ‘Nripati’. Shah Jahan called Bajbahadur as “Jagirdar of Kumaon’.

Ministers of Cabinet in Chand Kingdom

Broadly, there were three layers of cabinet ministers or administrators
1-Religious administrators – Pauranik Guru, Purohit and Dharmadhikari
2-King family – Maharajkumar (crowned prince), Lala or Gusain (younger princes)
3-Public and Defense Administrators- Deewan, Bakshi, Bisht, Bajir, Mukhtyar were as today’s secretary of deputy ministers. There were Lekhiya, Faujdar, Sradar, adhikari, Bhandari, Musahib and other administrative officers.
King used to take advices from Guru, Maharajkumar, Mukhtar, Deewan, Bakshi, Faujdar, Lekhwar and Hakim of Mal.

Mukhtyar or Mukhtar- Mukhtar was chief minister of the King.
Deewan, Bakshi and Bisht (Bajeer) - These administrative positions were important positions under Mogul Emperor and were copied in Kumaon too. Bakshi was minister for defense and economic establishments. Bajir was mainly related to general administration. Many times, same person was incharge of both the positions as Harsh Dev was Bajir and Bakshi in deep Chandra period.
There was no clarity about the duties and responsibilities of these posts. Depending upon the situation, a person used to interfere in other administrator’s area.
Lekhyari or daftari- He was as Chief Director of court. Under him other record officers were appointed. There were administrators (sahayak lekhwar) for each Pargana (region). Initially, Ratangali Bhatt and Sahu of Dwarhat were lekhwar. In later stage, Adhikari (caste) were lekhwar. However, after the capital was shifted to Almora, Chaudhari of Jwalamukhi took posts of Lekhwar from Sahu caste people.
Kalamdan - The important orders from the Kings were communicated from Kalamdan office. ‘kalamdan office used to be under Bajir. Bajir was responsible for ‘kalamdan’. The King used to sign on inscriptions. The king used to sign on order only after bajir would give pen to the King (it was a type of formal advice from Bajir). The king only used the ink from official inkpot. The key of ‘Kalamdan’ used to be with Bajir.

Vatsalya Rasa or Rapture of Affection for Progeny in Garhwali Folk Dramas

गढवाली लोक नाटकों / लोक  नृत्य -गीतों में वात्सल्य रस

Review of Characteristics of Garhwali Folk Drama, Folk Theater/Rituals and Traditional Plays part -66

                                    Bhishma Kukreti

In Garhwali there are tens of folk songs related to rapture of affection for children from parents. The following song is marvelous example of rapture of pathos and rapture of affection for progeny.
In this ong, the son is buried in bank of rivulet and his mother is remembering her dead son.

 Translation
My beloved son is sleeping in rivulet (buried after death)
Should I visit that rivulet or not to visit that rivulet?
My son would by crying due to hunger
He would be searching mother for milk
My part of heart (dad son) would not find his mother and he would be crying alone
He would be searching mother here and there
Now, the valley is covered by cloud
He would have lost the pat in cloudy valley
My son the motherless (dead son ) will be weeping without mother
